August 2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of Prime Healthcare’s acquisition of St. Mary’s General Hospital, a pivotal moment that saved the hospital from closure and ensured continued access to quality health care for the greater Passaic community.

In August 2014, Prime Healthcare, a nationally recognized and award-winning health system, stepped in to acquire St. Mary’s General Hospital. Prime Healthcare has invested more than $60 million in improvements to the hospital, ensuring that St. Mary’s General could continue to provide high quality medical services to the residents of Passaic and surrounding areas.

“Prime Healthcare’s motto, ‘Saving Hospitals, Saving Jobs, Saving Lives,’ has truly come to life at St. Mary’s General Hospital,” said Sonia Mehta, MD, CEO Region II of Prime Healthcare, which includes New Jersey’s Prime hospitals. “We are proud to have played a role in preserving this vital community resource and will continue our commitment to excellence in patient care for generations to come.”

The acquisition and subsequent investments by Prime Healthcare not only saved St. Mary’s General Hospital from closure but have also significantly enhanced the quality of health care available to the residents of Passaic, Clifton, Wallington, Carlstadt, Rutherford and East Rutherford. The hospital’s continued operation has been a cornerstone of community health, providing critical services and employment opportunities. The acquisition of the Passaic hospital was Prime’s first venture into New Jersey, which was followed years later by the purchase of both St. Michael’s Medical Center, in Newark, and Saint Clare’s Health in Dover and Denville.
