The Morris County Vocational School District announced a new full-time Academy for Aviation in partnership with Roxbury High School. The academy is designed to meet the increasing need in the aviation industry for airline pilots, drone operators and aircraft maintenance.

High school aviation programs are rapidly growing across the country and the Academy for Aviation, located at Roxbury High School, will provide students with rigorous standards, opportunities and aviation experiences. Offering a robust curriculum that covers three areas of focus — aircraft pilot, drone pilot, and aircraft maintenance — students will be prepared to sit for their Private Pilot written test, the Part 107 drone license test and an introduction to aircraft maintenance and repairs.

Partnering with industry leaders, educational institutions and organizations, students will have access to cutting-edge technology and opportunities to learn from guest speakers, and through real world experiences. The academy will also expose students to a number of aviation careers such as airline pilot, aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, drone pilot, drone maintenance, NTSB Accident Investigator, aeronautical/astronautical engineer, helicopter pilot, medevac rescue, FAA careers, Customs and Border Protection, aircraft rescue and firefighting, and airport operations.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Shari Castelli, said “we plan to empower students to soar beyond their limits. Whether they dream of piloting aircraft, mastering drones, or keeping planes in top condition, our hands-on program will help students’ careers take off. Partnering with local airports and colleges, the program will chart a course for the future of aviation education starting fall 2025.”

Students in eighth grade may apply via an online application until Nov. 16. To learn more, interested students and parents are encouraged to attend an information session on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.in the cafeteria at Roxbury High School. An academy program of the Morris County Vocational School District (MCVSD) provides students in grades nine through 12 in-depth instruction in a specific career pathway. Students attend the academy program instead of their local high school unless the academy program is housed in their local high school. Students take their academy class each year along with the state Department of Education’s academic requirements. All academy students receive a high school diploma from the Morris County Vocational School District, regardless of their academy location. Each academy has a unique academy course sequence and opportunities for internships and earning college credit.

Morris County Vocational School District (MCVSD) offers a wide range of career and technical education programs that inspire and prepare students to succeed in today’s world and pursue tomorrow’s opportunities.
